New updates on projects and website

It has been way too long since the last update and post. The pandemic surely did not help but as we come out of this period next up is a fresh update on the web site and the blog format. Look for these changes over the next few weeks as we work through the summer to prepare for the next Winter cycle. One of the new projects since we last posted included the new https://mscbikeparks.com/ site we launched last Summer as a complement to Mountain Sports Club service. Look for more and more year round activities to be added like rafting and more.

Why SnowGage? Snow Depth Technology…Satellite Based vs. Ground Based Systems

Over the past several years new technologies have come to market that are clearly starting to benefit the snow business. The high efficiency snow wands and control systems of HKD Snowmakers are a good example of this and so is Vail Resorts’ EpicMix application. Various new technologies have proven their value to us all by now.
The next technology to come on the scene for resort operators is snow depth monitoring.
Why is this important? By knowing snow depth you can avoid making more snow than is needed in the early and late season. You can also move snow from areas that have excess snow to precise locations on the slopes that need more snow. No more guess work. Once they implement the right snow depth monitoring system ski resort operators can expect to save 10%-20% in overall snow making and grooming costs. A ski area with a $1,000,000 annual budget for snow making and grooming can expect to save $100,000-$200,000 year. That is a substantial savings whether you operate a small-to-medium-sized ski area or a major operation with multiple resorts and an annual budget of 5 to 10 times that amount.
Are they worth the cost? Let’s take a look:
First, some background information: All snow depth monitoring systems require the use of satellite GPS to plot the location of each snow groomer, but there are key differences between what is commonly referred to as a “sat based” (comparative elevation) system versus a ground based (snow penetrating) system.
Effectiveness: A satellite based system compares the surveyed altitude of a given point/location to the current altitude that a snow groomer is at once snow is covering the slope. It is claimed that this technology will provide snow depth data to an accuracy of 1-2 inches. A ground based system pings through the snow surface and measures the distance to solid ground using wide band radar to an accuracy of 2-4 inches.
Complexity: Sat based systems require a detailed aerial survey map be made of every run on the mountain. In many cases a system of signal repeaters must be installed and maintained in several locations to boost the satellite signal in deep canyons or certain slope aspects. This is costly, often $100,000 or more just to set up the infrastructure for the system. For a ground based system such as SnowGage, no such surveys or added infrastructure are needed. A relatively simple and compact wide band radar unit (about the size of a shoe box mounted on the bottom of each snow groomer) sends signals through the snow every few seconds to get an accurate reading of snow depth in real time, without the need for costly repeaters and satellite relays.
Cost: Satellite based systems such as Leica (Prinoth) and SnowSat (Pisten Bully) can range from $75,000-$100,000 or more for initial mapping and set up, plus a per unit hardware cost of at least $50,000 per groomer. A ground based system such as SnowGage has no up-front mapping or set up costs and is under $20,000 per groomer to deploy.
More about SnowGage: The units are designed to withstand the rigors of the cold and harsh alpine environment. A rugged Juniper Systems Mesa2 tablet is installed inside the cab and paired with the SnowGage sensors. A GPS receiver mounted on top of the groomer provides real-time data accessible to resort operations staff through a secure cloud based app. The visual data includes accurate snow depth, illustrated in color on a high resolution Google Maps base layer. The system can also display snow groomer fleet locations and performance data. Using this information, resort operators can develop and implement better coverage strategies, manage snow resource allocation and improve overall snow making and slope grooming efficiency. The cost is affordable and the savings are significant.

World Violence needs to stop

This is a real simple post. We are living in a world that is losing respect for life and basic principles of respect for life. Ideologies and religions(questionable some of them IMHO) now are endorsing the executions of those who do not share the same beliefs. The concept of dialog and tolerance has been lost.

If we wish to survive on this planet as a species and actually thrive we must re learn tolerance and an acceptance for differences.

Please lets get beyond this senseless violence.

Welcome The Vortex Group from Alaska

We recently have had the pleasure of meeting and on boarding a new Lyris email client, The Vortex Group. A specialist in health care placement in Alaska for over a decade Jim Wilke and his nimble team make sure the remote regions are staffed with good and reliable health care professionals.

I must admit their approach to content is the most authentic non sale.promotion content I have ever seen in regular emails. Jim has done a great job building a loyal following by showing his authentic care and love of the land they live and work within.

Images showing how dry and snow starved the region has been and is this winter

The initial emails were an update and narrative on the Iditarod during this warm and snow less winter. Performance in terms of open rates and engagement is excellent and much above most performance benchmarks.

AlpineReplay - World' Largest Social Network of Skiers and Snowboarders

This post is month's overdue. This past winter we had the opportunity to work with AlpineReplay in introducing their services to the ski and snowsports industry as they roll out many new features in the app Alpine Replay and on their web site.

The many features include being able to take an Instagram photo and embed this into the sessions sheets that show you the summary and detail of your day skiing or riding on the mountain. Here are examples of recent ones posted on Alpine Replay.

This past winter marked the initial full season of Alpine Replay use globally. Clearly the number one app for skiers and riders across the globe. Users have logged billions of vertical feet and days on the mountain at over 1500 resorts across the planet. Currently we have hundreds of thousands of users in North America alone.

This past season saw numerous accolades like being selected as Staff pick by Google in the Android store and a top user rating n the Apple store. New features like the patent pending video feature and Facebook and Twitter integration enables unprecedented user generated content available to resorts and mountain enthusiasts. We will continue to work with Alpine Replay to extend and expand our resort offerings for the 2013.14 season.

New Amazon Store for Skiers Peak

There is always the ongoing debate among many as to whether one extends selling their goods on partner sites like Amazon. I have been of the belief given the size of their audience you sure try to make it work. One of our clients, Skiers Peak in Michigan, made the decision to go forward with this effort given the specialty ski and outdoor items they carry we felt it would open a significant market opportunity.

After working the last few months in being prepared, we launched the Skiers Peak Amazon Storefront yesterday, Tuesday the 7th of August. With no fanfare or promotion we are pleased to see orders begin to flow into our store. Now we will work to significantly expand our offerings. We opened with just under 200 and should grow that to over 1200 in the coming weeks as we prepare for Q4, the holidays and peak ski season.

Be sure to visit our stores and take advantage of great prices on top brands like The North Face, Head, Fischer, Obermeyer, PraNa and more.

Google Places and Facebook Check In

The explosion on geo check in on mobile phones and the next wave of coupons associated with this is being played out with both Google and Facebook pushing each side. One account  we just turned on a new Facebook page last week was Skiers Peak in Michigan. We have spent more time recently updating clients Facebook pages to take advantage of new features with a look to being able to provide coupons off of the phones when one is near you. The two giants Google and Facebook are getting good at offering free services to small and midsize businesses viewing to attract there users to their establishments.

On the Google side we are accomplishing this with Google Places. We just posted a coupon for our Mountain Sports Club and will see where it goes with a couple of retailers moving to this next. There are numerous restaurants and establishments racing to take advantage of these powerful marketing opportunities. Contact us with questions and a quote for services at 303.554.0222.

Google +, New Facebook look and social media

We continue to add more and more social media features for clients as users continue to select many different channels to communicate and interact with brands. On the Google+ front this week we launched Google+ for Mountain Sports Club. This has been a real soft launch with a badge on the home page and we are seeing new traffic and referrals as a new source in our traffic analytics. Google is truly making this a component of search results going forward and we view this as a must do for clients.

On the Facebook front we just launched the new Skiers Peak Facebook page and one for Mountain Sports Club. We will continue to add new features as a available. facebook check in is coming and the ability to add mobile coupons. We are prepping clients for this as well as extending coupons on Google as well. Look for more examples.

Other social media requests we are responding to from clients include building and activating Pinterest accounts, making sure these (new social media icons like Pinterest and Google +) are integrated into email messaging and site design. As we know more and more opportunities continue to arise and the challenge is implementing and integrating to be efficient.

Google+, is this really going to make it?

I sure hear lots of buzz regarding Google+ and just last week signed up and activated an account. Not seeing much activity here that would suggest it could supplant twitter, or Facebook. Chris Crum's article today - Facebook seems worried About Google+, Should it be?, raises the point it appears twitter may take more of a hit than Facebook and discusses some of the obstacles along the way.

Are you using Goggle+? What are you discovering?

Google+, Facebook & Twitter

Quite the buzz and lots of opinions with the announcement of Google+. Is this the Google effort that will make its true mark in social corners? Many have speculated it will take a chunk out of Facebook's shine and now some say it is twitter that may take the bigger shot. Check out comments from Chris Crum on this topic in. Do you think they can maim Twitter as discussed.

Me I just signed up for a test account and am very curious how well this will take off and work. Having used many of the google family of products it wold be nice to see it all come together in a clean and intuitive fashion.

Google to Rebrand Blogger and Picasa

The word is out that Goggle will be re branding both Picasa and Blogger in the next month or two. The relaunch and branding effort to unify Google services and products is tied to the launch of Google+ coming in the next month. These 2 services will be called Google Photos and Google Blogs according to sources. Fore more details see related story.

NY Times Announces Digital Subscriptions

With today's announcement that the NY Times will begin to introduce different versions of a digital subscription to have full access to all their online content, the discussion is surely to heat up as to whether this is a viable business model and will the consumer buy it. The Wall Street Journal has proven to be one of the few to effectively execute such a strategy. As old media continues to wrestle with the consumption change and corresponding carnage in their advertising another solution that is effective needs to emerge.

What are your thoughts? Will you subscribe? I will test to see how well it works.

Blogging still? Of course and also Tweeting, Facebook and more

The ongoing debate on does social media sites like twitter or Facebook mean the demise of blogging or email.  We continue to hear this as noise that distracts from reality. A very good summary and analysis of this discussion is found in this article - Is Blogging Really in Danger Because of Social Networks?

The following helps to put this discussion in proper perspective from our vantage point:

Qouted from referenced story on WebProNews.com -  "Blogging has legs — it's been growing now for more than a decade, but it's not a 'new thing' anymore," says Mullenweg. "Underneath the data in the article there's an interesting super-trend that the Times misses: people of all ages are becoming more and more comfortable publishing online."

As is established every time this debate comes up, blogging and social media sites like Facebook and Twitter complement one another. End of story. Without blogs, people would have less interesting content to share on Facebook and Twitter. Without Facebook and Twitter, bloggers would have a harder time getting the readers.

Kopytoff does make a critical point, however. The lines aren't always crystal clear about what is truly "blogging" and what isn't. Even Twitter use is often called "microblogging".

We are seeing daily in the rapidly changing world how blogging and the various forms of social media are now working to drive change at every level in our world.  Bloggers may very well be more powerful agents of change than any modern day army.

We need to continue to use an integrated approach to each of these strong communication tools in our business and daily lives.

Facebook Goes down and Twitter is the Outlet to Discuss

I find it very interesting as Facebook is down midday that there are conversations starting on twitter regarding this and I am not seeing lead stories on old media web sites. As these titans of new media battle with ever emerging new forms reliability or performance will remain a key part of winners. What are your thoughts? Did Facebook going down impact you at all?

Twitter is Hacked Big Deal or not?

With all the social media rage and discussions on how best to use and leverage the various options, such as twitter, it is no wonder the hack yesterday happened. It sure seems to have been rather quickly resolved. We are curious if it impacted your business. If so let us know how. Quick story at NY Times goes over the incident(s) - http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/twitter-hacked-tuesday-morning/?hpw.
